Scroll Saws for Marquetry

how to build a workshop from scratch

Intarsia in Italian is the Italian name for marquetry. The meaning of intarsia has been expanded to include the technique that starts with a thick base wood and creates individual pieces for a three-dimensional effect. Intarsia projects have no background area of basewood around them, which is a departure from other marquetry techniques. The project is surrounded instead by a piece or base wood that acts as a backdrop for each individual piece.

How To

How to join wood without using nails

Woodworking is an enjoyable hobby. It is relaxing and enjoyable because you can create something useful with wood. Sometimes you may want to join two pieces together of wood without using nails. This article will show you how to do it to make your woodwork projects look great.

You will first need to trim the edges of your wood pieces before joining them. You don't want any sharp corners to cause problems later. Once you've done this, you're ready to start gluing your boards together.

If you are working on hardwood, you should only use glue on one side. If you are using softwoods such pine or cedar, glue should only be applied to one side. After applying the glue, press the boards firmly until they are completely stuck together. Make sure you let the glue dry before moving on to the next step.

After you have glued your boards, drill holes where you want to insert screws. Depending on what type screw you choose, the size of these holes will depend on how big they are. For example, if your screw is a 1/2-inch wooden screw, drill a hole that is at minimum 3/4 inches deep.

After drilling the holes, you can drive the screws into your board's backside. Be careful not to hit the front surface of the board, or else you'll ruin the finish. Avoid hitting the screws' ends too often when driving screws. This will prevent splitting the wood's end grain.

Protect your finished project now. You can either seal the entire piece of furniture or cover the top. You want it to last years, so you can use any product. You can choose from oil-based varnishes or polyurethane, shellac and lacquer as examples.

You can find these products at most home improvement stores. Just make sure that you buy the right kind for the job. Some finishes are toxic and should not ever be used indoors. Always wear protective gear when handling any of these finishes.
