How To

How to stain wood

Staining wood is the process of applying chemicals to the wood's exterior, which alters its color. This chemical reaction causes wood to turn from whiteish to brownish. Although oak is the most popular type of wood to stain, there are many other types that can be used.

There are many ways to stain wood surfaces. Some methods involve mixing the stain with a solvent (such as turpentine) and then brushing or spraying the mixture onto the wood. Another method involves applying a solution of water to the wood. It is possible to mix stain into varnishes and paints, making it part of the finishing coat.

Preparing the wood surface is the first step to staining it. Clean the wood to get rid of any grease, dirt or other substances that might be detrimental to the stain's application. Sanding the wood removes scratches and imperfections. Next, you need to decide which stain you want. There are two main types of stain: non-penetrating and penetrating. Penetrating and non-penetrating wood stains penetrate deeper than other types, making them perfect for dark colors like mahogany. The best non-penetrating colors are those that work with light colors like maple.

Once you have decided on the stain type that you want, get your tools ready. A paintbrush works well for applying stains because it allows you to spread the liquid evenly across the surface. It is a good idea to have rags on hand in case you need them to clean up any stains that may remain after you have finished painting. If you plan to mix the stain yourself, make sure you have enough containers available to hold the different components of the mixture.

Once you have prepared your materials, start by cleaning the area where you plan to stain the wood. Use warm water and soap to clean away dirt and dust. Wipe down all furniture pieces with a dampened cloth and clean water. You should remove any debris, especially if your plan is to stain darker wood.

The stain should be applied next. Apply the stain by brushing or spraying it onto one side of the furniture. Move slowly and carefully along the grain of your wood until you reach its opposite end. The stain should not drip off of the wood's edge. Before moving on to the next steps, allow the stain drying completely.

A coat of clear polyurethane sealing agent is applied to protect the paint. Apply three coats of polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat, which should dry overnight, to dry before sanding.
